puppy-kisses: why do dogs lick?

Love them or hate them, “puppy kisses” are something that is sometimes unavoidable with dogs around the house. Dogs tend to lick a lot, and there are so many reasons behind this habit. They might be anxious, showing affection, or even bored. Knowing the reason behind your dog’s licking habits is important to be able to make sure they are healthy and living their best life, and to be able to reciprocate the love.

First of all, dogs can lick you, their surroundings, or even themselves, due to boredom. You can get them to stop by giving them a stimulating toy or engaging their minds with a dog puzzle or treat-hiding game.

Another reason dogs may lick is due to anxiety. Anxious dogs lick for comfort and as a way to self-stimulate. Usually in this case your dog would be licking their own fur repeatedly. If your dog is doing this, try to get to the root of their anxiety in order to keep them happy and healthy.

Some dogs might also have medical issues which should be resolved with a vet. Anything from skin irritations, to a rash, and on to infection, gastro issues, or even pain can cause your dog to lick themselves. Getting in touch with your pet’s vet is your first step to a solution.

Though not quite appealing, another reason is that your dog likes the salty taste of your skin. On one hand, it is enjoyable, and on the other, it is a way to identify their owners by the taste of their skin. These salts are secreted from the body with the regular sweat that builds up on a human’s body.

The reason we love best is affection. Dogs do show their affection towards their owners by licking them or giving them “puppy kisses”. This goes back to their innate habit of licking their mother’s face before being fed and even licking their brothers and sisters creating a bond and forming attachments. Similarly, your dog might show you love by licking you.

If your dog is healthy and happy, just enjoy your dog’s kisses and remember, they really do love you! You can always get in touch with a vet through our Vet Connect page and book a slot that's convenient for you for an online consultation.
